Every year, March 21st has been dedicated to Down Syndrome Awareness.
It has been set on this day because Down syndrome is when a person has an extra copy of their 21st chromosome. This is why it is on 3/21.
Down syndrome, also called trisomy 21, was discovered by Doctor John Langdon Down in 1887, which is why it is called Down syndrome. But, he truly did not understand why it happened. It was not until 1959 that it was discovered that Down syndrome was caused by the extra 21st chromosome.
Most people believe that if a person has Down syndrome, they are sick. This is not true. It is only the extra chromosome in their DNA that gave them Down syndrome, so they are not sick.
People with Down syndrome are just like us, they may have the intellectual disabilities, but that makes them no different than us. They can get jobs like we can, they can do anything that we can.
Some successful people with Down syndrome include Megan McCormick, who graduated with honors on an associate’s degree in education at Bluegrass Community & Technical College.
Even the cast of A&E’s show, Born This Way are successful! John is a rapper, and Megan has her own fashion line. Steven has a rare form of Down syndrome, call Mosaic Down syndrome, meaning not every cell in his body has the extra 21st chromosome.
So to the people with Down syndrome, rock that extra chromosome! It makes you extra cute!
